"I feel so lucky to have such an incredible coffee shop near me"
Catching Up Over Coffee - Eliza, Richmond Regular
Ever since we opened in Richmond in 2018, our goal has been to create warm, welcoming, and timelessly beautiful spaces where the community can gather and connect over incredible coffee. That’s really what makes neighbourhood coffee shops so special - they’re public spaces that make people feel at home.
We’ve grown a lot over the past year and a half, but that overarching goal has always remained the same. After opening our new Fitzrovia cafe, we thought it was the perfect time for us to sit down and check in with some of our long-time Richmond regulars to find out how we’ve been doing. Eliza, 20, has been with us since the very beginning, and was kind enough to chat with us about university life, cinnamon rolls, and the importance of internet access.
Kiss the Hippo: Hey, Eliza! Thank you so much for catching up with us. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself, and how you found Kiss the Hippo?
Eliza: Thank you! I love Kiss the Hippo. I can still remember how excited I was when you first opened: I saw the adorable red hippo on the window, and the rest was history. [Laughs] Really, though, I feel so lucky to have such an incredible coffee shop near me. The space is so beautiful and calming - it’s one of my favourite places, whether I’m catching up with friends or studying for exams.
Kiss the Hippo: So, you’re a student? What do you study?
Eliza: Yes! I study Art History at Kingston, which is just a half hour or so away from Richmond. That’s actually one of the reasons why I was so excited when Kiss the Hippo opened - it’s so lovely to have a coffee shop near me that I can visit on my way to Uni in the morning.
Kiss the Hippo: Tell us about your morning routine.
Eliza: I’m definitely an early bird. On days when I have class, I like to wake up as early as I can and go for a jog. Richmond is so beautiful in the morning - it’s a great way to start the day. After that, I usually listen to a podcast while I get ready and make sure I have everything I need for Uni. Then, I head out the door - and stop by the coffee shop not long after! It’s so nice to take an hour to myself to drink some coffee and go over readings for class while I wait for my train to arrive.
Kiss the Hippo: What do you think makes Kiss the Hippo such a great study space?
Eliza: So many things! I don’t just think it’s a great study space, though - it’s the sort of space you just want to spend time in no matter what you’re doing. For me, though, that’s usually studying. I always have so much to do! Having a coffee shop with WiFi in my area is extremely important to me. It’s so nice to have a coffee shop nearby where I can settle in and get work done after a long, stressful day. This is my happy place! Being able to do work here makes my studies that much happier, too. Especially when I get to reward myself with one of your cinnamon rolls!
