Cooperatives like Unión de Cooperativas Agropecuarias San Juan del Rio Coco (UCA SJRC) are a hallmark of the world of coffee. Ranging from a handful to thousands of people, coops mark the coming together of producers to pool resources and knowledge in order to create better coffee. We believe it is important to work with coops as it provides a chance to tell another story, not just the one about the intrepid experimental producer but also about many people working together to build community and make something special.
Nicaragua is one of Central America’s lesser known producing countries. With the mammoth producer Honduras next door and some of the world's most celebrated coffees being grown in Panama and Costa Rica, Nicaragua can sometimes be overlooked. However, this doesn’t mean Nicaragua lives in its neighbours' shadows. The lower altitude country is home to incredible weather to grow and especially process coffee, with dry, predictable conditions that make great processing easy to achieve. Alongside these conditions, there are a growing number of cooperatives and individuals creating the next generation of coffees.
