Esmeralda is the world’s most-awarded coffee farm and the place that first discovered the beloved gesha cultivar. Like all Arabica coffee, gesha is native to Ethiopia. It made its long journey across the Atlantic in the 1930s, first to Costa Rica and then finally to Panama, where it was planted but not fully understood. It took over 80 years until the gesha trees had their fruit separated from the rest of the trees on the farm. Once it was picked, roasted and brewed, this special cultivar changed the world of coffee forever.
This natural processed lot is a mixture from Esmerelda’s neighbouring farms. At Esmeralda they build different lots from the farms based on quality and taste. This particular lot comes from the farms Jaramillo, Quiel and Cañas Verde, which sit within a small variance of altitude. The coffee grown on these farms is therefore very uniform and the flavour clarity immensely high. This climate uniformity is supported by the Peterson’s deep knowledge of coffee growing. Their experimental farms and the knowledge found there constantly push them to be at the forefront of specialty coffee.
