How to Upcycle your Coffee Grounds

At Kiss the Hippo, we put sustainability at the forefront of our mission. That’s why we’re a carbon negative coffee company – and, from compostable coffee pods to recyclable packaging – we do everything we can to reduce unnecessary waste.

In our cafés we turn our used coffee grounds into bio-fuel. But we know you can’t do that at home. That’s why we’ve tried and tested a method of making into something just as useful, a homemade coffee exfoliant which is the peak of natural self-care.

We advise using finer coffee grounds, to not irritate the skin. With their sand-like texture, they work to gently remove dead skin cells, helping rejuvenate and boost circulation. It’ll leave your skin glowing, feeling silky-smooth and looking fresher than ever.

And guess what? All you need to make your own exfoliant is four ingredients and three simple steps.

How to make your own coffee scrub

Ingredients

1/2 cup of dried used ground coffee (the finer the better)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Mix 1/2 cup ground coffee with 1/2 cup brown sugar
  2. Add 1/2 cup coconut oil and 1tsp vanilla extract into the coffee mixture
  3. Mix well until combined

To store, keep in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge. This mixture will keep for several weeks. To use, simply scoop out a small portion and gently buff onto the skin in a circular motion. We like to store ours in the fridge, as it feels much nicer on the skin when it’s cool and soothing.

Now all you need to do is rub the mixture over your body, avoiding the eyes, and leave it on for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

And if using in the shower, be careful – the oil can make the floor slippery!
