A Calmer Kind of Coffee 🌿

We’re excited to bring you Low Caf, Brazil — our newest coffee release, and the first in our range of naturally low-caffeine coffees.

At Fazenda Rio Brilhante, in the heart of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the Urban family cultivates something truly rare: Aramosa, a naturally low-caffeine variety that bridges two species — Coffea arabica and Coffea racemosa.

This rare hybrid combines the refined complexity of Arabica with Racemosa’s gentle, naturally low-caffeine profile, creating a cup that’s smooth, balanced, and beautifully composed.

It’s everything you love about coffee, just naturally a little lighter.

A Rare Hybrid Worth Celebrating

Aramosa is one of the most distinctive cultivars in the world. While most Arabica coffees contain 1.4–1.6% caffeine by weight, Aramosa sits at just under 1%.

Unlike decaf, where caffeine is removed either using chemical methods or gentle natural processes such as the sugarcane or water method, Low Caf’s easygoing character is entirely natural, preserved straight from the seed to the cup.

A hybrid variety, Aramosa is a cross between Coffea arabica and Coffea racemosa. The goal in creating it was to combine the delicious flavour of Arabica with the naturally lower caffeine content of Racemosa, a species native to South Africa and Zimbabwe. The result is a coffee that brings together the best of both — Arabica’s sweetness and nuance with Racemosa’s calm, balanced energy.

Grown on mineral-rich soils in Coromandel, Minas Gerais, this coffee develops a soft, rounded flavour of white sugar, cranberry, and hazelnut. Each sip carries the warmth and richness of Brazil’s terroir, with delicate sweetness and a refined, calm finish.

What Makes Low Caf Different from Decaf

At Kiss the Hippo, our decaf coffees are always processed with care — gently decaffeinated at origin using the Sugar Cane Process, which naturally removes caffeine while preserving sweetness, vibrancy, and depth.

Low Caf, however, begins differently. The Aramosa plant itself produces less caffeine, meaning the lower level is completely natural to the variety, without any additional processing.

To confirm this, we had the coffee lab tested for caffeine content. Results showed just under 1% caffeine, compared to around 1.4–1.6% in standard Arabica, and approximately 0.1% in our decaf range.

Think of it as sitting naturally between regular and decaf — full in flavour, but with a softer, gentler lift.

The result is a smooth, balanced cup with subtle florals, sweet hazelnut tones, and a refined finish, perfect for slower afternoons or winding down at the end of the day.

Light on Caffeine, Rich in Character

Our lab tests also revealed naturally high levels of chlorogenic acids — polyphenols found in coffee that support gut health, act as powerful antioxidants, and have anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds are known to aid a balanced diet and complement an overall sense of wellness.

Each cup of Low Caf contains around 120 mg of chlorogenic acids, making it one of the most polyphenol-rich coffees we’ve ever roasted. It’s an interesting expression of how certain varieties can offer both depth of flavour and a naturally gentler effect on the body.
