At Sítio Maranhão, the Betti brothers prioritise sustainability alongside their unwavering dedication to producing high-quality coffee. Through various initiatives such as utilising natural fertilisers and reducing water consumption, the farm strives to minimise its environmental impact. Furthermore, they have implemented a programme to safeguard the surrounding ecosystem, which involves reforestation and the creation of natural habitats for local wildlife.
This lot is the standout coffee from Sítio Maranhão their Yellow Catuai, which is processed using the natural method. After handpicking the coffee cherries, they are transported via a short tractor ride to the patio by the farm house where they are left to dry in the sun for several weeks. During this time, the Betti family meticulously monitors the drying process to ensure uniformity and prevent over-fermentation. This variety of coffee is known for its unique sweet and acidic flavour, with its yellow colour indicating a slower maturation process and more complex taste.
To achieve optimal growth and production, the Betti family carefully tends to the coffee trees through pruning and fertilisation. Despite producing only 300 bags annually, Sítio Maranhão's commitment to sustainability and quality has earned them a reputation as a highly respected and sought-after producer. Their passion for coffee shines through in every aspect of their operation, and their dedication to the environment and local community has made them a valuable contributor to the region. By sourcing beans from Sitio Maranhão, Kiss the Hippo is able to help support small-scale farmers like the Betti Brothers and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the coffee industry.
We don’t label our coffee as espresso or filter. Instead, for each coffee we create a unique roasting profile, designed to bring out the best flavours from its origin, farm and milling method. That’s why, instead, we label our coffee based on the experience it brings to the cup.
