Our third Low Caf release, and our second Excelsa. Confirmed in 2025 by researchers at Kew as its own species, Coffea dewevrei, Excelsa sits on a different branch of the coffee family tree and carries naturally lower caffeine with no decaffeination involved. This lot comes from Equatoria Coffee in Nzara and Yambio County, South Sudan, within the species’ ancestral range.
Hand-harvested, then sealed whole to ferment without oxygen before drying in full fruit. Expect rose, jackfruit and a savoury thread of tobacco.
Excelsa was first documented near Lake Chad in 1903, and South Sudan sits firmly within its ancestral range. This lot comes from Equatoria Coffee, part of a project working to re-establish Excelsa as a commercial crop in the region it came from. Where our first Excelsa was an anaerobic honey, this one ferments as a whole cherry without oxygen and dries in full fruit, which pushes it somewhere more floral and more unusual: rose and jackfruit up front, a savoury tobacco note underneath. Naturally lower in caffeine, with nothing removed to get it there. A late-afternoon cup that still gives you something to think about.
We don’t label our coffee as espresso or filter. Instead, for each coffee we create a unique roasting profile, designed to bring out the best flavours from its origin, farm and milling method. That’s why, instead, we label our coffee based on the experience it brings to the cup.
